Brief History
In 1903, the Town of Houlton acquired all the outstanding shares of stock of the privately owned Houlton Sewage Company. The Houlton Sewage Company was organized to provide sewerage service to the inhabitants of Houlton. In 1937 Private and Special Laws provided for the consolidation of the HWC and the Houlton Sewage Company. In 1908, the HWC purchased the assets of the Houlton Electric Light and Power Company to provide electric service to the inhabitants of Houlton. In 1939 the Town of Houlton purchased the final outstanding shares of stock of the Houlton Electric Light and Power Company to become 100% owner of the HWC. Today the HWC supplies electricity to approximately 5,226 customers, water to approximately 1,945 customers, and wastewater to approximately 1,705 customers in Houlton and surrounding area. |

ManagementThe HWC is governed by a 6 member Board of Directors elected by the citizens of Houlton. The Board of Directors is charged with conducting the business of the HWC in the best interest of its customers. The Board hires a General Manager to manage the affairs of the Company.
